President Christina Jordon called the meeting to order at 7:00p.m.

Officer Reports

 

 

Kevin Culling presented the Secretary’s report for Bryan Mangiavellano (No Printed Report).

o   Minutes were emailed following the spring meeting

o   Minutes from the last meeting are available online

MOTION by Tavia Zerman, seconded by Stacie Detgen, to approve the report; motion passed.

 

Stacie Detgen presented the Treasurer’s report. (Printed Report)

 

MOTION by Sandy Atkins, seconded by Jane Church, to approve the report; motion passed.

 

Kellie McInchak presented the Band & Orchestra report. (Printed Report)

o   Still need a HS site on the March 6-7 weekend.

MOTION by Dave Norman, seconded by Paul Bickel, to approve the report; motion passed.

Motion by Jean Lee, 2nd by Lorri Wittenkeller to move the Orchestra site to the March 6-7 weekend at Chippewa Middle School.

 

Melissa Marks presented the HS Solo & Ensemble report. (Printed Report)

o   Northern Site is Eaton Rapids HS, Southern site is Tecumseh MS

o   Expect a full day work assignment

 

MOTION by Patty Floeter, seconded by Sheri Powers, to approve the report; motion passed.                

 

Carolyn Sherrill presented the MS Solo & Ensemble report. (Printed report)

o   Expect a full day work assignment

MOTION by Jane Church, seconded by Sandy Atkins, to approve the report; motion passed.

 

Jean Lee presented the Orchestral Activities report. (No printed Report)

o   String Clinic was last weekend.

MOTION by Lorri Wittenkeller, seconded by David Funk, to approve the report; motion passed.

 

Lynn Kelsey presented the Adjudication report. (Printed Report)

MOTION by Jared Throneberry, seconded by Lynn Kelsey, to approve the report; motion passed.

 

Committee Reports

 

Patty Floeter presented the Music Education report.  (Printed report)

 

Sandra Atkins presented the Marching Band report for Bryan Mangiavellano. (Printed report)

 

 

Patty Floeter presented the Middle School Honors Band report. (No printed report)

o   Okemos High School will be the site this year.

o   Patty Floeter is the new Middle School Honors Band chair.

o   Discussion of the switch to a single band as opposed to two bands of equal ability.

o   Discussion of a possible date change for future years.

 

Motion by Jared Throneberry, seconded by Sandy Atkins, to switch to a single Middle School Honors Band as opposed to two bands of equal ability for the 2008-2009 school year. Motion failed.

 

Committee to discuss the future of the Middle School Honors Band was formed. Members will be: Sandy Atkins, Kevin Culling, Patty Floeter, Joe McInchak, Aaron Mykelloff & Jamie Mykelloff.

 

 

Chris Jordon presented the Jazz report for Mark Stice. (No printed report)

o   Mason High School will be the site on January 27th.

o   Mark Stice is the new Jazz chair

 

Sheri Powers presented the Festival Improvements report. (Printed report)

 

 

Nathan Heim presented the Computer/Technology report. (No Printed report)

o   Nothing to report.

 

Joseph McInchak presented the Elem/Mus Ed. Workshop report. (No printed report)

o   There will be no workshop this year.

 

Chris Jordon presented for Jason Cunningham the Youth Arts Festival report. (Printed report)

 

 

Chris Jordon presented for Chris Rupp the Medals report. (No printed report)

 

 

Chris Jordon presented for Joel Shaner the Member Emeritus report. (No printed report)

 

 

Gary Sullivan presented the Commissioning report. (No printed report)

o   Last year Hal Leonard allowed District 8 membership to download the new composition: Flashpoint by John Moss.

o   The work is now published by Hal Leonard.

 

There was discussion of formation of a committee to decide on the new composition. No committee was formed at this time.

Chris Jordon presented for Joel Shaner the All-State Ensembles report. (No printed report)

o   Adrian HS and Okemos – Chippewa MS are the audition sites. Register online. Please contact Joel Shaner or Chris Jordon if you have Digital/CD recording equipment

 

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

Scholarships: Stacie Detgen spoke to the idea of offering college scholarships to deserving District 8 students. There was past discussion on this idea and it did not go anywhere. There will be more discussion, and there may be a proposal at the Winter meeting.

 

Open Classification: The question was asked if any information was compiled regarding how many schools participated in the MSBOA state-wide Open Classification Pilot Program.

 

Calendar: There was discussion of the approved Calendar and conflicts of the Middle School Band Festival and the MSVMA Middle School Choir Festival.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Stacie Detgen mentioned that she had Percussion Works USA come out and work on her percussion equipment, she recommended them to our members.

 

Kellie McInchak informed the membership that Paul Bickel was married this summer.

 

Beth Bousfield invited HS Directors to participate in the Ingham County Parade.

 

Jane Church plugged the Grand Ledge Marching Band Invitational.
