Northwest Middle School

 

President Joel Shaner called the meeting to order at 7:02p.m.

Beth Lewis presented the Treasurer’s report. (Printed Report)

o       Consider uses for surplus monies

MOTION by Kevin Culling, seconded by Stacie Detgen, to approve the report; motion passed.

 

Kirk Gronda presented the Band & Orchestra report. (Printed Report)

o       See Kirk for online registry problems.

o       The basic music list is online

o       Make program changes online, not via email

o       Consider working the orchestra festival

o       Correction to printed report: MS fest is the 9 & 10, not 10 & 11

o       There will be more events at Eaton Rapids

o       Limit your accompanists!!!!

Carolyn Sherrill presented the MS Solo & Ensemble report. (Printed report)

Jean Lee presented the Orchestral Activities report. (No Printed Report)

o       There will be a meeting for all MSBOA string teachers

o       MMC, 1/26, 5pm, lobby of DeVos

o       Especially beneficial for band/choir people who teach strings

o       Topic will be “Middle Level String Workshop”

o       Suggestion to keep careful inventory and checkout of instruments

Committee Reports

 

Paul Bickel presented the Music Education report.  (Printed report)

o       Reading session at MMC.

 

 

Bryan Mangiavellano presented the Marching Band report. (Printed report)

o       Went well.

o       Thank you to those who helped out

 

Lynn Kelsey presented the JH Honors Band report. (Printed report)

o       Audition etudes are online

o       Using retired directors instead of university directors.

 

David Larzelere presented the Jazz report. (Printed report)

o       Lunch time bands may get a slight time adjustment.

o       Adjudicators and MSU students will perform

o       Email David your program asap

Melissa Marks presented the Festival Improvements report. (Printed report)

o       Open classification discussion

o       Will vote on open classification participation- as a district- at the spring meeting

o       Check the FIC meeting minutes for more detail.

Jerry Rose presented the Computer/Technology report. (No Printed report)

o       Go to the pre-conference on technology

o       There will be excellent session during the conference

o       Take advantage of the lab there too.

 

Kelli McInchak presented the Elem/Mus Ed. Wrkshop report. (Printed report)

o       Dr. Conway has great support info on 5th grade band programs

 

Jason Cunningham presented the Youth Arts Festival report. (Printed report)

Chris Rupp presented the Medals report. (No printed report)

o       No report.

 

Sherry Dopp  presented the Member Emeritus report. (No printed report)

o       No report.

 

Joel Shaner presented the Commissioning report for Gary Sullivan. (No printed report)

o       Joel read letter from John Moss

o       John Moss has been having back problems.

o       The project will be late- should be here in March

o       Suggestion that directors need to login to access district page

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

o       Creation of an All-state Chairperson.

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

o       2007-2008 Calendar presented- discussion

§        Easter holiday is in March.

§        Consider open enrollment

Motion to adjust calendar by Kirk Gronda, second by Chip Williams.  Discussion.  Motion passed.

 

o       Consider pilot program of B&O during week

o       Rule changes- purchasing minutes for festival must be used for performance, not warm-up

o       Research/consider purchasing equipment.

o       Consider another commissioning project- 2 at once?

 

Motion by Tania Dupius to give executive board permission to contribute to Okemos commission in memory of Jan Birchman.  Second by Dave Rosin.  Motion passes.

 

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

o       Dave Rosin has been nominated for orchestra teacher of the year.

o       Vandercook pre-festival clinic will be Feb.24

o       Tri-district band concert on Super bowl Sunday at 2 p.m.
