MSBOA District 8

Middle School Solo and Ensemble Festival

Report to the Membership - May 7, 2007

Many thanks to Gary Rouster and all those who worked hard to host a successful Solo & Ensemble Festival at Hanover-Horton Middle/High School on April 21, 2007.

Statistics for the year:

The spring festival had 35 participating schools with 439 events for an average of 12.5 events per school.  Last fall’s festival had 25 participating schools with 575 registered events for an average of 23 events per school.

Both the fall and spring festivals are experiencing fewer registered events than in previous years.   Not too long ago, we had 15-18 sections in the fall and 12 in the spring.  This past year we had 12 sections in the fall and 8 in the spring.  Why are we experiencing a decline?  Considerations include scheduling, traveling distance, lack of student or teacher interest, over-committed students, etc.  Should we be concerned?  Send me your thoughts.   I am especially interested in hearing from those who do not send students and those who are sending fewer students than five years ago.

Tentatively, next year’s Middle School S/E festivals are scheduled for

·        November 17, 2007 at Charlotte Middle School  and

·        April 19, 2008 at Hanover-Horton High/Middle School.

·        Please check next fall’s handbook for the official dates and locations.

Respectfully submitted,
